When she was a little girl, Houston started performing professionally in the choir of her church. She sang backing vocals for Chaka Khosn's song from 1978 Im Every Woman with her mom. Then she went on to sing backing vocals with Jermaine, Lou Rawls, as well as her mom. Her first gig was as a lead vocalist with the band from New York called Material and it was the excellence of her work as a vocalist with them that attracted the attention of the major record labels including Arista who signed her in 1983. This is where she stayed for the rest of her professional career. Her debut album Whitney Houston was released in 1985 and quickly became the top-selling album of a debut artist.
